Homesick Moose

Oh Brother... What a week! Moose and I moved to our new 'Moose Lodge' on the 26th. In the days leading up to that Moose was pretty worried about watching his stuff go into boxes but when the movers arrived on the 26th, all hell broke loose in his little Moosey Brain! I had to pack up the 'hospital' so thought he would be ok in his crate...WRONG! Wooof Wooof Wooof spin spin spin! So I tied him to a tree out front and it was better, woof woof woof, but generally better. halfway through the move I took him to new place and when we left to pick up the last load I put him in his crate with some chewies and left. When I came back the tray was slid out of the bottom and the chewies were on the other side of the room and the crate was bent (see pic!) and one of the bars was broken. His gums were red and bleeding a bit and one of his teeth was chipped. I was absolutely sick! He has never seemed distressed in the least about his crate and to know his emotional stress trumped the pain he was causing himself was so sad. Since I needed to go back to my old place to clear out I decided to take him to the vet for some sedatives. Vet gave us Acepromazine (25mg) and said start with 1 and if that was not enough then it was ok to give him a 2nd and it would take 45min to kick in. So I gave him one at the vet and 20 min later when we got home he could not even stand up much less get out of the car! He had to stay in the car for 4 hrs until I finally recruited a neighbor to help me stretcher him out and he slept until morning! Unbelievably stressful for both of us, I am so glad it is 'over' though he is still pretty nervous about the new place. I have tried to put him in his pen when I am home and he barks and claws at it so I have given in and let him have the run of the house. I am very worried that I am slowing his recovery but can not stand the idea that he is so mentally stressed and afraid it will lead to bad habits. We are due for his 6week post-op x-rays next week, keep your fingers crossed that he is still on track but I am worried 8-(

I don't know about this place mama, the beds are terrible!

Oh, well as long as my toys are here, I guess we are home!

Now I just have to get rid of the fake plants the last people left behind and it will really be a Moose Lodge!

  1. Oh Moose! You gave your mom such a scare. Its OK, little labradude, your new lodge has all the cool stuff your old lodge had.

I don't know if it would help, but pee-wee's crate was solid except for the front and vents on the side, but if you are stressed I guess you could still get hurt biting that.

Simmer down, dude, your incarceration is almost over.

P.S. Momma says she is sending her vibes to your mom to help her get through this transition.

  3. Hi Moose,
So sorry to hear that your move was so hard on you. I hope you start feeling at home very soon! Don't worry, as long as you have your toys and your people, you are home! Good luck at your appointment next week. I will keep my paws crossed that you are still on track for your recovery.

  4. OMG - I am laughing through my horrified mind at your story! On top of moving and the TPLO, that is the last thing you needed. I left Eli alone after 1 week while he had his E-collar on in his pen, and when I got home an hour later, he was out of his pen roaming around the house and his pen was completely bent. When they're determined, there's not much you can do to stop them. Good call on the drugs.... I would have done the same thing. Hope Moose is adjusting!!!

  5. There is nothing like a fake plant attack to make you feel better. Be well boy!

  6. Since you asked...
When my dane chipped his tooth he didn't even notice it. In fact, I didn't see it for awhile, either. If the fracture exposes the pulp, it is possible for bacteria to travel up the root canal and cause an infection. This is what led to Savage's tooth extraction, though the fracture had happened at least a year and a half ago.
I would like all dog owners to be wary of letting their babies chew weight-bearing bones or the "pet beef bones" they sell in grocery stores. This probably includes those huge "smoked" bones, also. Savage's chipped tooth, as far as I could tell, was caused by chewing on a pork hock. Remember that anything harder than a dog's tooth can and will chip the tooth. Wish I would have paid more attention to that warning.
Anyway, I just got to your blog, and am looking forward to exploring. Thanks for stopping by mine!
