Moose-proofing the pantry

The Moose lodge has a nice sized pantry which was something I wanted when I was house hunting. Unfortunately, my moose is also nice-sized and very clever when it comes to obtaining foodables which has forced me to squish everything edible onto the top shelf meaning the rest of the shelves are safe for... lightbulbs and that is about it! Not how I envisioned it...

Why not make sure I close the door? Well, a long time ago he showed me he could nudge the doors open so I took to bungee-ing it shut which led to him pulling the whole door off the track.

I bungeed it again and came home to teeth marks on the door (though it was still closed at least!). So then I shoved everything onto the top shelf and have been leaving the door open so at least he won't damage it any more.
So, I am spending this rainy Saturday re-arranging the pantry so that it is moose-proof! Moving anything that will not be of interest to him to a lower shelf so I have more room on the top shelves.
But to do this I had to figure out just how high he could reach if he really wanted something. I had some mixed feeling about doing this since it could further reinforce the behavior but since he has already done it so many times I decided it was worth it to do it once.
You can see the test results for yourself in the video. I was really surprised he could not seem to put his paws up on the second shelf. One time after a pantry break in I saw a paw print on the second shelf but now I think it must have TeddyNo who was more limber than my Moose!
On the other hand maybe he was just pretending he could not so I will put foodables in his reach... hmmm time will tell!

  1. Moose! Very clever of you pretending not to be able to reach that shelf. Now she will be sure to leave the yummers foodables there.

I have to hand it to you, that is a great scam you have going on.

  3. Those are TeddyNo's pawprints on the second shelf, not mine!!! There's no way I'll let you link those pawprints to mwah.

Am too clever to fall for that... until the next really yummy goes on the the second shelf, that is.

  5. Hi Moose!
It's too bad that all the foodables have been moved out of your reach! I hope you get some extra dog approved treats out of the deal!

  9. Just read your last comment on my blog. At first I thought you said 'PANTY RAID' :)

I was thinking that sounds like Jack when he steals my underwear out of the laundry basket!
