Brain Game

We got an awesome idea from Honey (who got the idea from Bandit & Isabella who we don't know) on how to make our own version of a dog puzzle like the awesome ones made by Nina Ottosson. We have seen a few DWB pals that have them but they are kinda expensive for us- especially since I was pretty sure Moose would resort to brute force to extract the treats which defeats the purpose!

So to start with I put a treat in every cup. Some were kinda plain and a few had more exciting things in it and one had chicken (his favorite!).

Then I covered them up with tennis balls and let him at it!

He found the chicken first and then found the rest in about 4 minutes. We played a second time with only 4 cups having treats in them and he found all 4 and only uncovered the cups that had treats in them which surprised me. I sort of wondered if he would just pick up the whole thing and dump it over but he has not thought of that yet!

Now that I have seen him do this I am tempted to get him one of the harder ones because I think it will take him some time to figure it out and that could be fun for him (and me- ha!). Here is Nanook and Pooka the Newfs showing how to play with the Tornado (one of the harder puzzles).I thought some other DWBers had tried some of these but can't recall who... I thought Mango had one but I could not find his post about it. If you have tried any of these puzzles and posted about it please leave a link in the comments so I can see it!

Here is a video of the fun and games.

Here are some of the other puzzles available. Some have a cheaper plastic version too.

  3. That is REALLY cool!!! I've got a bunch of the stuffie brain toys where I get to pull poor defenseless squirrels out of a tree, etc, but I'm going to talk to Mom about this, too, because this looks Really Cool! Thanks!!!

  6. We need to try this with Darwin. But first I need more tennis balls. She's not big on fetch, so we only have like 1 or 2 balls.... must stock up.

  7. Oh Moose is so smart!! Honey never figured out that she had to actully pick the balls up to get the treats - she kept trying to stick her tongue under them - the idiot! :-) Also, Moose is so clever to only go to the tennis balls with treats under them - Honey was all over the place - and she would ignore balls with treats and keep working at balls WITHOUT treats! The whole thing too so long that's why I cut & edited the video otherwise everyone would have been bored out of their minds watching...as I said, a pea-sized brain!! :-)

ps. glad you liked it! Maybe you could think of other similar home-made games which would be harder for Moose?

  8. We do indeed have one of those stupid intellectuals stimulations things. I, Mango, find it to be most confusing and way too much work. We made a movie from our first try with it.

I told Momma that I never wanted to see it again, thank you very much, but stupid Pee-Wee has been practicing with it.

  14. Moose! You are a LIFE SAVER! What a brilliant idea! I am going to stop and get a bunch of tennis balls on the way home tonight. Tell your Mum she is simply brilliant!
