Gopher attack!

The Moose Lodge has been under siege for the past few days! I think we have been infested by some kinda mega-gopher. Look at the trench they dug! It goes all the way from one corner of my territory, across the grass momma has finally gotten to grow,

around to the side of the Moose Lodge by momma's office door,

aaaallllll the way to the back yard! What on earth?

The gophers went so totally nuts that they even knocked my gate down so I had to be on a leash in my very own back yard!

For the first day momma and I were pretty much trapped in the house because of course Mooses are not really 'all terrain' kinds of critters but momma called these guys (kinda like Mango's Tool Time pals but momma says no where near as cute!) who made a bridge over the trench so I could go for proper walkies.

Now I only got a glimpse of the evil varmint what did this to my yard but he was huge and green like some kind of gopher-saurous or something!

It has been 3 whole days with no 'fenced back yard' meaning that I can not go bake in the sun any time I want and can only go outside when momma will chaperone me. Total bummer! Momma is really hoping they put the fence back up tomorrow and I am not allowed to say why but it will be doubly important to have a fenced yard tomorrow!

Note from Momma: This mess is actually a good thing (I have to keep reminding myself of that when I look at my yard). The Florida Keys have finally established a wastewater treatment system! Up to now everyone has relied on septic tanks or cesspits. Since we are living on a narrow strip of porous limestone this means the wastewater was making it out to the ocean and the reef very quickly and adding to the serious problems we are seeing out there. So with wastewater now being treated before it is released, the ecosystem will have one less stress to handle (there are still lots of others, but this is kinda a big one). If this looks and sounds expensive, it is! The cost of the infrastructure and treatment plant has been distributed to our property taxes over the next 25 years but the actual connection to the sewer pictured here is all out of pocket (and mandatory within a 2 month time frame) and involved digging a 100+ ft long trench in this rocky limestone ground. My water bill will also triple from ~$20/mo to ~$60/mo. Still, it is a good thing and looonnnggg overdue! I just hope the contractors can get the fence back up... I have my doubts!

We hope that you get your fence up again soon so that you can get some of your freedom back! We HATE it when Grammy puts the horses into the yard to trim the weeds and we can't go out! 10. So... they are environmentally conscious gophers?

Great thinking about the bridge! But shame about the No-Sunbaking-On-Your-Lonesome rule

    MMM sunbaking....

Lets hope they build you a nice new fence quicksmart! and enjoy your new water system!

  12. Moose mom, thanks for the esplication (as we say here in SoFla) -- we were starting to wonder if those gophers were more exotic creatures come to wreak more havoc as we're not sure they're indigenous.

Glad to hear someone (besides you) cares about our reefs!

  13. Well, that poop tunnel will be a good thing once it is done, but for now it looks scary. Anything could fall into that ditch. Not to mention being chained to mom every time you have to potty.

Yuh, we have the septic here. Makes very green grass.
