True Colors Thursday...Rust

True Colors Thursday is a meme hosted by Blue and this week's color is Rust. Like last week I am going to start off with a literal interpretation of the color and what could be rustier than actual rust! This is the bottom of the light house on Carysfort Reef. If you recall my blue post, there was a panorama of Carysfort reef that I shot from the top of this light house.

This is a fireworm! It is as awful as the name sounds. I suppose it might look kind of pretty to some but those little white puffballs are actually clusters of spines that it releases when it is threatened and they are like fiberglass that leave the feel of bee stings on you! Aside from that they are voracious predators of coral including my beloved elkhorn and staghorn corals! This guy is actually eating the cactus coral in this photo!

This is a rust colored sponge I saw in curacao. I am not sure what kind it is... sponges are tricky to identify!

This is a colonial ascidian or "sea squirt". Would you believe that these are the immediate precursors to animals with backbones???

This is a sea urchin I saw in Hawaii. I do not know the names of things over there but it is similar to our slate pencil urchin in the Caribbean only much more colorful!

I could not find and Rust colored things for Moose, but here he is with a kinda rust-colored friend named Buddy at the dog park!

Next week's color is 'colourful' things in general. I will be at sea with sporadic at best internet so I will try to post if I can! If not I will catch up when I get back! The upside is I am likely to come home with a whole new set of pics to use for TCT! Stay tuned!

  3. I love that first picture! It shows the beauty of the ocean and somehow gets across the feeling of its timelessness - and I love how the birds are lined up, too. Buddy looks like a nice friend. We hope you have a safe trip!

    See ya!
