I just saw my pal Koda slurpin' away over on his blog and it made me wonder if you humans know how doggie tongues work?

Some people are always complaning about my messy sloppy drinking habits but if she had to drink with her tongue I bet there would be way more water all over the place!

In case you have not seen this amazing Discovery Channel video before, here is some super slow-mo that shows how we do it. Did you know we curl our tongue BACK and scoop it in under our tongues? Most people picture curling it forward and bringing it in on top of our tongues.


I got momma to dredge up some file footage that sort of shows it if you are imaginative!

I keep telling her that if she does not want such a mess she should get me a bigger bowl!

I always wondered...

just how much food my Moose would eat if he were given an endless supply. Well today I found out and the answer is 6 1/2 cups! This may not sound like much to some but it is very dense kibble and that is more than 6 meals (3 days) worth of food! I bought a new bag of kibble but wanted to finish the old one first so I could not put it in the vittles vault when I brought it home. So I put it behind the vault with my tool bag in front of them both and went off to work.

I came home to a terrible smell and my moose peeking around the hallway corner. He would not even come greet me, he was just kind of wagging and watching me.






So I went into the kitchen and was greeted by this crime scene.
He pulled everything out and ripped open the bag. He drank a full bowl of water too. Once he got up the nerve to come into the kitchen he wanted to go out and immediately pooed twice came back in to a full water bowl and emptied it!









Then he curled up with his squatter bunny and laid around making terrible sounds and smells!

He did not ask for dinner though I would bet he would have eaten it if I had given it to him. He showed only a passing interest in my dinner which is unheard of! I guess he has a tummy ache! I think he will skip breakfast too!

Prizes from Honey!

Another package! Awhile ago I won the Prop-assisted category of Honey's Spectacular Slobber contest and she sent me prizes! I just got a Paw it Forward present from the JAZ Pack and now this!

So Momma gave it to me to open and I was doing a great job when she decided the plastic envelope might cause trouble and took it back to open it herself.

Ok fine... Open it! But she was doing it all wrong so I kept trying to take it back. It had MY name on it for heavens sake!

 When she finally got it open there were some awesome smelling things in there! It smelled like Cows, Deers, All sorts of meats and Honey (the dog not the food)! The first thing she pulled out looked like a candy bar for doggies! It sniffed really good but there was more!

Deer tendons? OMD I could hardly keep from ripping it out of her hand it smelled so yummy. Momma giggled the whole time because I had my happy ears on from the moment I got the package (see photo #3) and I also had my 'front whiskers' out which is where my whiskers are pointed straight out and some even point forward because something sniffles really good. But when the deer tendons came out this is when I got the crazy eye too! That only happens when I am in a doggie trance. You may not really be able to tell since most of you have not met me but my momma can tell from this pic that I am in a crazed euphoric state here!

This awesome thing also gave me the crazy eye! It is a part from a cow milking machine! I had one before but TeddyNo shredded it down to a nub! Back when I first got it I was recovering from knee surgery so never got to tug and play with the first one before it was shredded to bits and put in the Bin of No Return! Now I will be able to tug with it (aside from just chewing licking and sniffing it which is pretty good too)!

I also got this glorious pin-up of Honey herself! It was really hard to sit still for this picture because I kept trying to get started on my new treats but momma was mean and insisted I pose for a 'Thank-You' picture.

What better way to show how thankful I am than to sample everything and show how much I am enjoying it though!

You will have to take my word for it that I am sampling the doggie bar here and not momma's hand! Most Yummers as the Mango would say!

Why... Deer tendon? Don't mind if I do! I wonder if they will make my knees better? Whatever! It was crunchy and chewy and good!

Here is me looking all cracker dog with the udder tug! You will have to biggify this one to truly appreciate it. I did this pose just so momma would giggle a lot, and it definitely worked!

Not the Tricky T-Day Contest & Inspiration

We just realized that today is the deadline for Ludo's Not the Tricky T-Day contest so Moose wanted to enter one of his favorite non-tricks... Couch Surfing! Though in the interest of full disclosure, it was taken while watching his favorite show: 'It's Me or the Dog' He will stop and watch the Tee Vee when he sees or hears dogs on it but when this show is on he will sometimes plant himself down and watch quite attentively! Hopefully since it is a show about tricks and training it will not get us disqualified from the Not-Trick contest!

 

 

It was easy to get these pics because it has been a lazy rainy saturday on a long weekend, so what could be better than snuggling up and zoning out! Of course when the thunder starts he heads off to the storm shelter for safety but once it passes and he hears dogs barking on the Tee Vee then he will come out!

Also, our buddy Parker gave us an award for providing inspiration during his TPLO surgery recovery. Moose had the same surgery a week before him and it has been nice to have a buddy to share the ups and downs with! We were really touched that he thought of us. We would like to pass the award onto Honey and Ludo who have been very inspirational in our latest training efforts! I had sort of let some of my Moose training goals slide in the past year and they have helped get me motivated again and it has been fun and rewarding! Thanks pups!

Slobberific!

We were very excited to see that Moose won the prop-assisted slobber category over at Honey's Spectacular Slobber contest! His winning entry demonstrated the true strength of his slobber! The amazing thing is, there were days where the strings of gravel were even longer, this is just the one time I managed to get it on camera ;-) Not too shabby though! Thanks to everyone who voted for Moose and Congrats to the other Winners: Mango, Max and Raja.

Slobber Contest Entry

Some of you may know that Honey is hosting a Spectacular Slobber contest. Here is one of our entries, it is not much but considering its striking resemblance to the Beer label we thought it worthy of posting! Ok, perhaps not striking exactly but you catch our drift!

Labradanes and drool contest practice

I have a traffic feed thingy on my blog that tells me about visitors to this page and how they got here and I noticed awhile ago that my post "Who's your daddy...Is Moose a Labra-dane?" gets lots of hits from people googling Labradane! I had no idea that was an actual word until I noticed this and lots of people think they have accidental mixes and apparently some are even bred intentionally. Well, One of these googlers left a comment about his guy Oscar, and has even started his own blog about him! You should check him out: http://labradane-sillybigdog.blogspot.com/. He is new to blogging so if you stop by be sure to introduce yourself!
On another note, our actual Dane friend Honey has launched a 'Spectacular Slobber' contest where you are supposed to post some photos of your drooling skilz. Moose is quite a drooler but with the likes of the Relentlessly Huge Mango entering I don't see that we can be competitive without some serious practice!

Last night we snapped a pic of a brief double drool though it is hard to see (Drool is hard to photograph!) and by the time we got a good pick it was much less impressive! Definitely not his best showing.

I think maybe we are going to need some props if we are going to get an edge over the competition so tonight, after binging on some grass on our walk he came up with this one: It is a long piece of grass stuck in his drool that he carried for blocks! What he may lack in frothy volume of the bigger dogs, he makes up for with stickiness. Here is an old post showing the strength of his slobber! And some of you may recall his Wordless Wednesday post showcasing his special drool catcher. So we still have some work to do but I think with some props and good camera timing we might get some sort of honorable mention ;-).

Not so fast....

Well it is a bit late but I am finally getting to updating Moose's progress after his 6 week check up which happened at 7 1/2 weeks which was a week ago... Apparently tardiness is contagious because my Moose's healing is a bit behind schedule too and we are really bummed about it. Here are his before and after x-rays (compare to Freia's!). Generally bone is expected to be healed by 8 weeks and many dogs are allowed a lot more freedom after that. I am no expert at x-ray reading but I have looked at a few others and I think we have a long way to go. Doc wants us back at 10 weeks which would be the 30th but I am not going to go that soon because if it took 7 1/2 weeks for that little bit of bone growth I suspect 10 weeks will not be that much different.



















Why not just take him for x-rays to keep an eye on things you ask? Well, it was a most unpleasant event. Aside from the major let-down of un-healed bone there is the cost $280 AND the absolute worst part is the fact that they feel they need to give my Moose enough sedative to sedate... well... a Moose! They cleared him to go home pretty quickly because they knew I was waiting (due to the 70 mile drive to the doc) but that led to a totally whacked out Moose while I was talking to the doc- he was shivering and crying and could barely stand then he tried to poo in the office and we tried to make it outside but left quite a trail of moose droppings! Then he spent the next 12 hours crying and drooling (note the dazed look and drool in the pic). It was so awful! All night he was acting like in the video below (note the drool) and was not even distracted from the crying while I made his dinner. He would stand by the door and cry then we would go out and he would stand there and cry. He was not even that bad after surgery! Next time I am going to insist that they go lighter on the sedative and have a little patience with him. The x-rays are digital so it is not like films are wasted. Sheesh! Anywho I think I will take him in mid-feb just to give more time for healing and hopefully will have some better news to report!

Gravelbeak!

This is what happens when you combine a back yard that has pea gravel (very common here in the keys) and a drooly lab who likes to lie on the gravel even though he has a coolaroo dog bed outside! You get strings of drool with gravel and in this case leaves stuck in them. This picture is not even the worst case of it- sometimes they are longer and he will walk around for a long time like this! I guess this explains why I end up with gravel in the house!
