Snake Invasion

As you saw in our last Wordless Wednesday post, Moose went strolling through the mangroves in our neighborhood prompting our fellow Floridians the Barkalot Boyz and even far away Honey in New Zealand to ask about the prospect of encountering snakes in there! Eeeyikes! It never occurred to me! We have encountered small snakes on walks and even on our back yard so not sure why I did not think of it. I am not really bothered by snakes but of course a dog could get into trouble not knowing what it is or startling one and getting bit. Even worse, for you non Floridians who may not have heard... we have a bit of a problem with Burmese Pythons down here!(If the embedded video won't play you can watch it here!)

I learned here that one was spotted less than a mile from the Moose Lodge last year! Holy Cow!

Moose heard that these pythons are a little bigger than his stuffie so wanted me to call on our Buddy Parker who has snake wrangling experience and Jack who went to actual snake school to come down here and help get these reptiles under control!

In the mean time I think we best stay out of places like that and if you are in the Florida Keys and you see a snake that is way too big you should call the Python Patrol!

UPDATE: Here is a dramatization of Moose being attacked by a python! (OK, it is our Pal Domino showing his Snake Wrangling skilz but it is pretty close!)

  4. OOOOO, I had to do rattlesnake training and it was SCARY! They put a new collar on me and then showed me the rattlesnake and then I got hit by a bolt of lightning. So, I will remember to stay away from the rattlesnakes!

  5. I agree, I am not afraid of snakes for myself, but dogs could get into trouble thinking they are toys!!
Oh and yet another twin moment between Moose and Domino, here is a picture of him as a snake wrangler!! http://itsmycatharsis.blogspot.com/2009/08/furry-friday.html

  6. OMdog - I'm glad those big guys weren't in the Everglades when we canoed through it 25yrs ago!

In CA we used to vaccinate Charlie et al against rattlesnakes, but that sure wouldn't help with pythons.

You two be careful down there!!

  7. I guess my South African skills will come in handy should they ever find their way to Master Chew Sits.

That re-enactment sent chills down my large and not fitting into a snake spine.

  9. Oooooo, snakes! Our momma would not like that at all, especially if one of them tried to hurt one of us cuz then she would have to jump in and try to save us and then all of us could be killed. You watch out fur those things☺

  11. Well, actually Moose - you won't believe it but my human actually LOVES snakes! Yup, you heard me right. She thinks they are beautiful and loves the way they feel - whenever she's gone to those snake displays, she always asks if she can drape the python around her neck! She thinks the big pythons are the most beautiful ( well, she thinks the giant version of any animal is the most beautiful...um, except for giant clams, perhaps!)

    Me - I have never met a snake and I don't think I'd want to! :-)

    Slobbers,

  15. Oh my dog. Moose, I just saw the video your mommy posted on my blog: the one with you in a bumble bee costume. After seeing that, I'm thanking my lucky stars that all I got was a flotation device! My momster says you look pawtastically adowable in your costume, but I felt your pain... you're such a champ to have protested so little!
