1 Karat Kong & Bathtime

Tonight was the dreaded bathtime! To make up for this traumatic experience Moose always gets a treat afterwards! Tonight he got a 1 Karat Kong as I call them.

I can see from comments on yesterdays posts that lots of you pups like carrots like my Moose! So I thought I would share my 'recipe' for this 1 Karat Kong! Ok so it is just a Kong with a carrot shoved in it but if any of you are advanced at Kong de-stuffing maybe you will find this challenging.
Here is what I start off with... nothing special, you can fill with whatever you like.

Like most Kong stuffers I like to use something that will stick to the walls like cream cheese or peanut butter in addition to solid treats.

Then I find a carrot that is at least as fat as the hole in the kong, it should be a really tight fit! I cut the smaller end of the carrot off and shove the other half into the kong so the fatter part is facing out. The longer the carrot the more difficult it will be so don't put too much of the other stuff in there!.

Then I cut the part that is still sticking out so it is flush with the edge of the kong. This way there is nothing that can be grabbed and pulled out!

Then make your hound wait patiently for the Kong...

... And see how long it takes him to get it de-stuffed. Moose can do this in about 15min so if anyone has any other challenging Kong stuffing methods we would love to hear about them!

  1. I love this idea! I hate that they charge so much for the "actual" kong stuffing...its so much more fun to make up new fun ways to make our dogs work for their treats!

  3. 15 minutes! Wow. Jack can de-kong his cookies in about 2. I'll have to try the large carrots to see if it works for him!

  4. Hi Moose!
Our good friend Brutus sent me over to check out your blog....30 minutes later, I'm just still reading and reading and reading! I have a big black lab brother who we rescued too. His name is Jaeger. He looks a lot like you, but I'm not sure he's as clever as you are. Good to meet 'cha!

  5. Moose you really earned that 1 karat kong. You look great with your clean shiny coat. We get kongs with stuff in it too but yours looks lots more chalenging. Think M will try it sometime. I can see her planning & thinking.

  6. Wow, Moose - you are a healthy hound...you like carrot??!!

That looks like a great idea for Kong stuffing - you have a very creative human! Sadly, I'm more of a junk-food fan than a health nut so I'm not interested in carrots at all...

  7. All that working for foodables. Yuck. That's one good thing about having a PeeWee brother. We don't have to put up with that because we have foodable "issues."

Actually, only PeeWee has issues since he thinks that some food is actually for him.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

P.S. Actually Dexter DOES have issues because he will chase poor Mango away from any food treats. Poor big guy.

  9. Wooos Moose! I can not believe you had to have a bath and then Mom makes you work for your Kong? So mean... I would not touch it anyway, I do not like carrots... Mom will probably try that with the Scampi though...

  11. I've tried to get Darwin to eat carrots, and she'll just mouth them and make a mess but never eat them. She does LOVE apples though, and lately I've been coring them, and smearing some peanut butter inside and she loves it!

  12. Woof! Hi There ... I'm Sugar. Just found your blog. I LOVE the KONG too. WOW! How long did it take you to eat the carrot. I have a tendency to give-up. My mom likes to stuff my KONG with some medium size treats n peanut butter. Looking forward to your visit to my blog and friendship. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

  15. In my house carrots are for PIGS! And noBODY takes food away from a pig.

I must also say that I think making a doggie WORK for foodies is not nice.

    I'm just sayin.

  16. Oh I LOVE carrots too! My mom uses baby carrots in my kong, only she turns them side ways inside the kong.
That makes them way more difficult for me to get out, unfortunately. My favorite is kong pupsicles in the summer, tho. (blended softened kibble, zucchini, chicken, whatever)
