We have a similar arrangement at meal times. Momma click click clicking away at the keyboard and I will bring my jug into the office...
...and plop it on her lap which is the command for 'feed me NOW'. She learned all of this pretty quickly considering she is a kind of air headed blond with a short attention span!
So although this system works pretty well I have decided lately to change things a bit and I am trying to train her to come and feed me by ringing the bell. So it works like this: Momma click click clicking away on the key board, I go to the side door and ring ring then when she is on her way to the kitchen I will trot off and bring her my jug so she can fill it while she 'happens' to be up and in the kitchen!
The system is flawless except that she is apparently confused by the bell ringing having 2 meanings and is being very stubborn about it all. She will come open the door but when I don't go out and show up with my jug she stomps off muttering about 'not what the bell is for' and 'abusing the system'! Do any of you training experts have any tips on how to correct this behavior?
From Momma: This is the funniest thing to me that he has put together that ringing the bell is another way to get me out of the office and into the kitchen! Clearly I must have fallen for this a few times and reinforced it before I realized what he was doing. Such a sneaky Moose! Now that I am on to him it does not work anymore though so he will probably give up trying eventually. Not your Typical tricky T-day post but I could not help but feel he was the one shaping my behavior!
Gosh, Moose - you are one talented doggie, training your momma so well! And I know what you mean about blondes with short attentions spans... got one of my own as a momma! Checked out your pantry-raiding skills too - quite impressive. Think my mom might have gotten a bad tip about that camera delay picture idea. Can you spell b-u-s-t-e-d???

Moose...this is Lily...good job. I ring the bell when I have to go pee pee. BUT..I have trained my momma too. I ring it when there is only sun on the porch and not inside. Ring ring..I want to lay in the sun. Mommas will learn..

Moose...you make a wonderful Mama's Boy!!! It is all in the Mama training!!

Well done!
ReplyDeleteI just sit near mine and bark

Moose! You totally rock. I see no problem with your training skills at all.
ReplyDeleteNow you need to train her to open the doors to the cupboard so that you can feed yourself.

I think you should feed Moose for his ingenuity alone. If he just rang the bell and didn't do the food jug, that would be one thing, but he ties it all together! Good Dawg, Moose!

Hey, who's training who???
ReplyDeleteMoose, Mom is the trainer and you are the trainee...
teeheehee
Hey Moose - I do exactly the same thing as you! I also ring the bell (especially when it's nearing my usual dinner time and I'm hungry!) to try and persuade my humans to feed me - in my case, it's made even worse by the fact that I eat my meals OUTSIDE so the two are actually linked!
ReplyDeleteMy human gets really annoyed with me when I do this - so what she does is: if I ring the bell, she always opens the garden door and shoves me out. She doesn't allow me to say "Sorry, no - don't want to go out" - so that I learn that everytime I ring the bell, I get chucked outside. No exceptions. And she will make me languish outside for 10mins if she has to! So after a couple times of doing this, I worked out that it wasn't really worth my while ringing the bell - unless I needed to do a wee or a poo!
I do sometimes still try it on and the other thing my human does is - if she knows I don't need a wee or a poo (I go at pretty predictable, regular times) - she'll just say "No" and then ignore me. I might try ringing it again a few times but eventually, I'll give up and just go and lie down somewhere (usually with a BIG SIGH!) - this way I learn that the bell isn't some kind of trigger button I can press to make my human hop around - it IS to ask to go out but it is still on her terms! :-)

Hey Moose buddy - you totally have a good training ability there. Well we gotta stick together some times right? I mean our mom's think they are the only ones that can teach us dogs tricks, I LOVE how you are teachin' your Mom. Good work!!! I do need to tell mom to get me one of those bottles though (she says she has a tough time finding it) I think she hasn't looked. Maybe you can get your Mom to tell my Mom here u got it??
ReplyDeleteHey Moose, keep up the good work. I'm trying to train my mom like that too. My cue to go out is to stand at the door and bark. Sometimes when Mom was upstairs (before the accident) I would stand by the door and bark, just to get her to come back down and hang out with me. Unfortunately, I blew it a few times by leaving the door when she came downstairs.
ReplyDeleteI've also tried bringing my kong toys to her to ask for a snack, but that doesn't seem to work either. Now I eat my snacks (when I get them) and then return the kong to the kitchen and drop it to ask for refills :)
