So a few days ago I decided to try to get my Moose to balance treats on his nose and flip them in the air and catch them... much to his chagrin! When I last posted He was just looking down and letting the treat fall and I could not figure out how to get him to flip it. I guess he was reading while I typed because the next time I tried it he started flipping it up instead. He is still not very good at it but he is getting better at catching them. I need to work on the balance part and getting him to wait though!

Hello there, Moose's Mom!
ReplyDeleteThat's lovely progress you are making with that trick!
Im not sure if you want a suggestion or not, but here goes...
What about using a 'flat' treat - and a little bigger? (A slightly bigger and flatter treat helps with the balance.) We use a flat dog biscuit (which you can break up in pieces during the training phase - to avoid too many calories!)
When I am doing this trick with our Max, I stand up really straight during the process of placing it on his nose. I keep eye contact with him all the time and then after a little time, give him the command 'get it'.
Both the 'wait' (in your case -'still') command and the 'get it' are acknowledged with 'good boy'.
I have also added hand signals to both commands - Open hand for 'wait' and thumbs up for 'get it'. He now responds to both the verbal and the hand signal cues.
Please...we are no experts, but just hope that you might like our suggestion.
It's going really well though - CONGRATULATIONS!
With love and best wishes for a happy Christmas!

Moose! Nice labrasuds you have going there. I am not sure about that trick, though. Especially in slow motion! I think I saw your insides your mouth was so wide open.
ReplyDeleteOf course Momma is totally impressed and now she wants me to learn to do that. I hope she meant drool and eat cookies and not balance things on my snooter.
Slobbers,
Mango
Moose - you have to stop learning how to do tricks, cause then the tall guy wants ME to do them as well!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Moose!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are doing a great job learning that trick! My Owner Girl has tried to work on that one with me but I just CAN'T let her set the treat on my nose! It's supposed to go in my mouth!

Moose you are getting good at that trick! Love the super slow mo...Very fun.

You have certainly made progress!! Love the drool that is collecting on the corners of his lips! Maybe if you used a 2nd treat in front of his nose to help keep him focussed. Does he know a release command (like "OK")? If not try working with a treat on the floor, and "leave it" until you release him. Then it should transfer over to the balance/flip maneuver easily! Hope that helps (I do a lot of training these days, for once someone asked a question I can answer!!!).
ReplyDeleteMichelle (Don't tell Brutus I told you....)
WOW Moose, you are really rockin' this trick...I am sooooo very glad I have a short snooter and probably Mama can't teach me this...WHEW!!!

Good boy Moose - we are impressed :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go Moose, but you're making the rest of us look bad...now Mom is trying the same thing with us, Geeze Louise!!! Don't look for any videos any time soon...we know the longer it takes to learn, the more treat we get-teeheehee!

Loved the super slo mo. You are really training your mom well to give you lots of treats.
ReplyDeleteWay to go Moose. You'll have it down in no time. Your Mom got some good hints. My Mom thought it sounded like a good trick for us to try. Don't know about that. But if it means treats ---well that is another story.

Hello, my fellow rescue. Wow, what's going on here? Moose is so lucky! He gets to eat the treats. My sissy, Frankie's, learning "leave it"... you understand the difference. BOL! Nice video and great idea to slow it down.
ReplyDeleteTwink!
Wow Moose! GOOD JOB!!! That is EXCELLENT progress. I need to now practice again! I used to have it down pat, but now i'm a little rusty - now that mom sees it here - we need to get back into it.
