Thirsty Thursday

I just saw my pal Koda slurpin' away over on his blog and it made me wonder if you humans know how doggie tongues work?

Some people are always complaning about my messy sloppy drinking habits but if she had to drink with her tongue I bet there would be way more water all over the place!

In case you have not seen this amazing Discovery Channel video before, here is some super slow-mo that shows how we do it. Did you know we curl our tongue BACK and scoop it in under our tongues? Most people picture curling it forward and bringing it in on top of our tongues.

I got momma to dredge up some file footage that sort of shows it if you are imaginative!

I keep telling her that if she does not want such a mess she should get me a bigger bowl!
Here is the whole discovery segment that explains the video above, the quality is pretty bad but you get the idea!

  2. Yuh, we saw that one too. Pretty cool. However, some doggies like me still prefer to stick our whole head in the water bowl to enhance the experience.

PeeWee went cracker dog seeing you at the swimming pool. He is counting the days until he can take a quick dip himself.

  8. I loved your post, Moose. I particularly liked your demonstration photos. You gave me an idea. I want to videotape my furiend Jude the Mastiff drinking. He's a slobber machine and I think it may be fun.

  9. Hey Moose, its fun to learn little tidbits like this. You can understand your dog better, you can dazzle your friends with the info and you feel smarter. What could be better?

  11. Our humans just don't understand that whole slurping thing - have you ever seen a human try to imitate a dog drinking water? Hilarious!!! And the real story is a great bit of information to share.

  13. Wow - how interesting!! I never knew myself that I scoop the water in under rather than over!

Hey - so how do they explain all the water that runs out the corners of my mouth all the time??! :-)

  14. We saw another of our friend's blogs about this exact same thing with the same video even today! It was at: blog.yassysgdk.com/2010/02/25/why-dogs-cannot-drink-water-without-spattering-water-around-water-bowl.aspx

This is so funny! Maybe we needed lessons really badly? Actually, my Mom's sister's dog, Molly, a CRAZY Wimeraner, is the one that needs lessons. She sticks her head all the way to the bottom of things with water in them to drink and then drool/splatters water ALL OVER the place! The CCC

  16. Thank you for the very interesting video. We have sat our mum down to watch it.
She is always moaning about the mess we make having drink of water.
She will now be better informed and will enjoy mopping up!

  18. I never knew that! My Great Dane Remi likes to drink out of the bathroom faucet - it also helps on the clean-up since he just dribbles the water back into the sink. We have double sinks in our bathroom so I have trained him to drink out of my husband's sink instead of mine. :-)

  19. Slurpy Slurp Slurp! I prefer mine with icecream! But I tend to make do...

Love your collar!! Orange suits you!! You should see the horrendous collar Ma has for me once this little beauty has run the hard yards... its "Fluoro Lime". WHAT THE!

    Your, Pal Koda
PS: its not a successful drink if you don't take a trail of water away with you...

  20. Thanks for sharing that! Guess my mom is going to post it as well :) as she has never seen how it actually works. She kinda avoids me flooding the kitchen by not filling up the bowl till the top :)

  22. Hey MOose - just wanted to tell you - don't know if you saw my last post called "Nudgee Beach" but I was thinking of you the whole time I was there coz it was a mangrove beach with mangrove trees all around it! Those pointy root things that stick out from the mud sure hurt your paws!
But once we walked past the mangroves, there was a bit of clear sand - well, mud really - where I could run and play (you can see this in the photos)...are your mangrove beaches like that? I remember you saying you couldn't go on the beach because of the mangroves - are yours different from the ones here?

    Slobbers,
