Well our surprise has arrived! Its Teddy! As many regulars know, I volunteer for Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida. I have not been able to help out as a foster home because back before Moose's injury we were renting and now that I have my own place I have felt the excitement of a buddy would wear him out and slow down his recovery. However, at the moment ALL of the South Florida foster homes are full and unfortunately the homeless labbies don't stop coming! So I agreed to be a temporary emergency foster. Emergency means that if we don't pick the dog up he will be euthanized. And today, Teddy's time was up until another LRRoF volunteer swooped in to rescue him and our job is to give him a place to stay until one of our permanent fosters opens up.Teddy was a stray and was just neutered today so, much like my Moose, there is supposed to be no 'horseplay' according to his chart. Moose
Teddy is a sweet sweet boy but a bit of a handful. It took me about 10 minutes and a lot of chicken to get the cone on him so it has to stay on which makes the crate difficult.
He definitely has not always been a stray. He knows sit and he seems to be house broken (knock on wood) but he has no boundaries whatsoever. When I am sitting on the couch, he will walk up to me and just keep walking until he is on my lap! I would love to do some clicker training with him but it is difficult with moose there AND he is not terribly interested in anything I have given him except chicken and I ran out. I even tried a Kong and he licked it but would not really play with it. I am pretty sure it was his first Kong and he also acts like he has never heard a squeaky toy before! Poor guy.
I know most of you readers have a full house of your own but if you know anyone who loves dogs please ask them to consider fostering. Before I could commit to full time dog ownership I used to borrow friends dogs and now I know I would have been an ideal candidate for this kind of emergency fostering. It is common too that rescue organizations need foster homes that do not have dogs of their own since some of the rescues will come in with kennel cough and need to be isolated for a short time. I wish I had known about this opportunity before I owned my own dog so if you know someone who loves dogs and might be able to help please spread the word and tell them to look for a local rescue organization (or LRRoF if they live anywhere in the state of Florida)!
Oh good for you for being able to help out with the foster doggies. Momma says it would break her heart and she would likely wind up keeping any pup that came for a visit.
ReplyDeleteLet us know if you figure out how to do training with two doggies around. We have a really hard time getting private training because whoever is left out is either howling at the window or outside interfering.

They look so handsome playing together! We are so glad Moose has a temporary buddy to keep him busy. Having a buddy is a great distraction. Some days we go out in the yard to play and by the time we come inside in the evening or in the afternoon for a nap we are exhausted from all the wrestling and bitey face. It is so nice of you and Moose to open your home to a rescue. Most of us were rescues and greatly appreciated the love and attention we received from our foster homes before coming to our furever home! Congrats and happy thoughts to all of you as you embark on a most rewarding experience!

We so admire what you're doing -- and we can imagine the fun with two dogs who want to play but are on restrictions That makes you the fun police!!!
ReplyDeleteWe wish we could do what you suggest -- but our homeowners association has a 25-pound limit so we're constrained. But we'll look for potential volunteers among the folks we know.

I wish I had room for another - but I am happy to try and spread the word!
ReplyDeleteAww...we hope Teddy finds his forever home soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting and your comments on my blog. I have looked at the blogger buzz now. It seems others have had different problems as well. So at least i wasn't alone...lol
That's so nice of you to open your home and your heart to rescues. I'll keep Teddy in mind if I hear of anybody looking for a dog.
ReplyDeleteSee ya!

It is so nice of you to foster! I wish we could help him out. I could use some more lab around to offset the shepherd hegemony. He sounds a lot like Oscar who came housebroken AND likes to walk into laps!

2 handsome boys in the house now, what more could you ask for. You are doing a GREAT thing Dana and Moose!
