I was running late yesterday morning and guess I left in such a hurry that I neglected to put away the cereal so I came home to this mess! I had just opened the box of Raisin Bran and when I got home there was less than a cup left in the bag so he essentially ate a whole box of Raisin Bran! Usually he pulls stuff onto the floor so I think I must have even left the box open so when he knocked it over it just poured down onto the floor. It looks like it could just be vacuumed up but I guess his moose drool combined with the sugar to form some industrial strength bonding agent because it had to be scraped hard to get it off!
He tried to deny it but he even had a flake on his head so the verdict is guilty! I am glad that there apparently were not enough raisins to be toxic but there was more than enough bran to cause some problems later! Terrible Beast!UPDATE: Woodrow (of Woodrow Sweetie and MJ) alerted us to the fact that raisin toxicity can take a few days to show up so now I am a little worried for my Moose. I did some looking and found some helpful info on the topic at the ASPCA website (they run animal poison control so I trust them). They say that the lowest reported dose that has been toxic is 0.32oz per kg which means for Moose 15oz and I estimate that he ate almoat 20oz of cereal of which maybe 4oz would be raisins. So I am hoping that my hardy dog will withstand this dose of bad mothering like he has many others to date but in the mean time I am keeping an eye out for the main concern which is Acute Renal Failure (ironically ARF) and symptoms are anorexia, lethargy, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, tremors, and hypovolemia. So far (knock on wood) he has not shown any of these signs but one of the initial responses to toxic exposure is excessive thirst and I noticed he was very thirsty yesterday afternoon. This could also be a symptom of eating 20oz of dry cereal though and he is peeing it all out so I hope all is well. Terrible Mommy!
Hahahaha! I mean, ahem, naughty Moose. We do similar things sometimes. And by sometimes I mean at least once a week.

ps. You are correct! The spondy-losis is in my spine and doesn't cause me serious problems. My ticker is another story.
At least he didn't get into the fridge for the milk!
ReplyDeleteOh Moose, where is TeddyNo when you need him? It would have been so convenient to say "Teddy did it."
ReplyDeleteSee ya!

You are a very sweet boy Moose (literally)! There is no way you can deceive your mom!

happy he is okay - it can be 3 days before he shows symptoms of raisin toxicity -
ReplyDeletewoodrow
Not a terrible Mommy at all - we all have these not so fun experiences. I would hope that four ounces of raisins are not enough to cause any trouble.
ReplyDeleteI guess we know of one dog who has plenty of fiber in his diet! :)
Poor Moose and Mommy...
ReplyDeleteI'd make sure he gets plenty of "outside time" until it all "passes"...
Hope to hear a good update soon!

ReplyDeleteHey Moose,
ReplyDeleteI love grapes, are they fat raisins?
Oh dear, oh dear, I'm gonna be sick !
I know what you mean about leaving in a hurry and then discovering that our curious canines have found a way to outwit us.
ReplyDeleteLast July, Jakey climbed on the dining room table, using a chair we had forgotten to push in, and proceeded to open a container and scarf down almost a dozen Ghiardelli chocolate squares.
Like you, I calculated the ounces and called the vet in a panic -- but was reassured that the amount wasn't "too toxic." (It turned out OK.) But, also like you, the evidence of who the "perp" was became incontrovertible when, a day later, a bit of shiny red wrapping appeared at the point of elimination!!
Glad Moose seems to be OK.
